Skin-kissed but not orange — quince, wet stone, the faintest fizz still trembling in it. Picked early, left alone. Drinks like a window thrown open.
Domaine la Grange — Loire, France
Pale and nervous and alive — wild strawberry over cold lava. Barely any color, all persuasion. The kind of red you forget is a red.
Cantina Pellegrino — Etna, Sicilia
Dried apricot, chamomile, a grippy little tannin that asks you to slow down. Orange wine for people who swear they hate orange wine.
Bodega Tierra Viva — Penedès, España
Serve it cold, drink it fast, pour another. Carbonic and giddy — violets and pomegranate with no edges anywhere. The house pour, always.
Les Vins Pirouette — Beaujolais, France
Cloudy, frothing, faintly feral. Bottled mid-ferment and capped like a beer. Green apple and yeast and a long crisp finish that tingles.
Weingut Sturmfrei — Mosel, Deutschland
Inky and brooding and unfiltered to the dregs. Black plum, iron, a little barnyard funk that the third sip turns into perfume. For the last glass of the night.
Azienda Controvento — Friuli, Italia
Bottles to take home from the shelf by the door — ask, and we will wrap one in brown paper.
IV — How an evening goes
